In light of all the campaign rhetoric going on and the desire for many to see America made great again, let us see what we really need to be great. We are a Church and a country mired in sin. If we want hope for renewal, it will not come from mere men.

There have been many who have gone from rags to riches in this temporal life, but to do so eternally takes a much Higher intervention. Who can stand before a Holy God and live? Who has clean hands and a pure heart?

“Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. And the LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, O Satan! The LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?” Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” – Zechariah 3:1-4 ESV

The destruction of Jerusalem and consequential Babylonian captivity left the people of God judged and ashamed, but God made a promise to Abraham and ultimately to Adam and Eve.

Here we see the Great Accuser, Satan, condemning Joshua the High Priest, who was clothed in filthy rags. Surely, the the nation was covered in mire as it was traversing through this time of harsh judgment. Furthermore, how could a sinful High Priest intercede for the people when he is just as guilty? It appears hopeless, but redemption was not far off.

In his own shoes, Joshua the High Priest rightly stood condemned as did and does everyone else, but our Advocate was there. He is the Lord Jesus Christ. He Who knew no sin became sin on our behalf. He is our Intercessor, our Great High Priest.

In a moment, Joshua went from absolute helpless condemnation to glorified hope! His sin was taken away, and he would be clothed with pure vestments. He not only removes our filth as far as the east is from the west, but He also clothes us with His righteousness. Only the Lord Jesus Christ can do that because He is God, the Holy One Who is without sin.

Therefore, let not the Great Accuser hold sin over your head. Rather, repent and flee to Christ. Cling to Him and His Righteousness. Seek first His Kingdom, and all of these things will be added unto you.
